Funny How Time Slips Away
One is a grandson, my first grandson. The other is a grandniece, my favorite grandniece. The first one celebrates his birthday on October 8. The other one's natal day is October 12. Andre is now 9 yrs old while Rachelle Ann has turned 10. Both are in grade school and just doing fine.
Funny how time slips away. I still recall, not too long ago, when Andre was born too small that he was placed in an incubator for many days. I was banging the counter of the nurses' station when they would not allow me to see the baby. It was, according to the head nurse, a strict doctor's order they had to comply with. The baby boy was in critical condition. Good he fought and good he survived. And a few months after, he became more active and his cries were so loud that it would wake up the entire neighborhood.
Andre is now attending a basketball training camp. He can dribble, he can shoot, he can run. He can move laterally and can make a quick turnaround. And he is meticulous when it comes to basketball shoes. He wants the latest in Nike's line of shoes. He checks the outsole, midsole and insole. And the lacing and lining too.
Rachelle was skinny then but that early, her fine features were evident. Beautiful eyes, alluring nose, nice chin and cheekbones. She would stand out in a group. And on our regular out of town trips, she would sit right beside me in my father in law's Starex van. And she would tag along wherever I would go.
And now Rachelle has grown up. She puts on makeup sometimes. And dresses well. And she has refined body movements. And still pretty. And no tantrums. Does not make face. I've never seen or heard her cry. Rachelle spends much of her time on the internet.
Hey, wait, I got word here that my only granddaughter Ashley will also be celebrating her birthday on October 18. She will be 6 on that day. Yes, she's only six but likes to wear high heel shoes and brushes her hair every now and then. You don't have to prod her to talk. She likes to tell long stories and even talks to strangers.
Just a few years from now, Andre will be in the company of his girlfriend. Same with Rachelle and Ashley. Male teens will be wooing them. They will be on their own, chasing dreams and looking for the big "wins" in life. And a few more years, quietly I'll move to the sidelines. And make way for them. It will be their time to take center stage. Time for changing of the guard.

* This just came in. My youngest grandson Arkin Phoenix also celebrates his birthday on Oct 21. This Australian-born kid is, like the grandfather, a wanderlust. He's got itchy feet. He does not stay in one place and likes to move, move and move. Surely this boy will go places someday.
