In a Blaze of Glory

Slam Dunk by Arwind Santos
 In a Blaze of Glory

It was sweet revenge for Petron 's Arwind Santos.  Ranking first in statistics for the 2011 MVP plum yet losing the votes to somebody in 10th place, Santos was a pillar of strength in both offense and defense as the Petron Blaze Boosters showed cohesiveness and steadfastness all throughout Game 7 to win the Governors' Cup title last August 21 at the Big Dome.  Final score was 85-73.

Backed up by the rejuvenated Danny Ildefonso, Santos typified the Boosters' sheer determination to deny Talk n Text a much-coveted grandslam.  Santos's brightest moment was when TNT's Ranidel De Ocampo drove to the basket for a slam dunk as Santos stood his ground and challenged the TNT power forward.  It was a clear and clean block with Santos gaining ball possession.  Santos scored 16 points, hauled down 16 rebounds, had 3 blocks and 3 steals.

Alex Cabagnot superbly orchestrated the Boosters' offensive thrusts as the wily sentinel squeezed out from tight guarding to either make a good pass or shoot from the outside as he methodically ran out the time in the closing minutes.  Point guard Denok Miranda had his share of timely shots as the backcourt tandem of Petron outplayed their TNT counterparts.

The TNT Texters, who always had the preference to live and die with their 3-pt shots, scored miserably from beyond the arc.  Larry Fonacier and Ryan Reyes missed their marks when the Texters needed them most.  Ace guard Jason Castro, upon whom the Texters' plays were anchored, had no opportunity to rise to the occasion as he twiisted his left ankle while driving to the basket.  He was done for the night.  In the battle of imports, Booster Anthony Grundy was more productive this time than TNT's Maurice Baker.

In the psy-war between the scientifically-inclined Chot Reyes and the pragmatic, down-to-earth Ato Agustin, the Atom Bomb clearly came out the winner.  In the post game press conference,  Ato dropped his last tirade:  " Pinili nila (TNT) kami kalaban.  Akala nila kayang kaya nila kami.  Kaso naka tsamba kami ng apat na beses."

Beer, not gasoline, was overflowing at Petron's dugout.  It was indeed sweet revenge for Ato.  For Arwind. For the entire Boosters.
